However, very often a practice will put their website on the back-burner, and soon forget to regularly maintain or even check their site for search result positions.

This can be very dangerous in the long term because where you show up in search results is aided by your site-update routine, and also hindered by what your competitors are doing.

The search engines are businesses. In order to keep people using Google, for example, Google has to make sure that when a person searches for something they are presented with the best-of-the-best results.
